An undervalued historic space
Opened in 1908, St Andrew’s Playground Park has, over the decades, witnessed the evolution of what is now known as Fashion District, so named as a result of the role it played in the textile industry at the beginning of the 20th century. The park and playground have continuously served the adjacent neighborhood: an area with a manufacturing tradition that has been re-purposed as a commercial and residential destination.
With the passage of time, the vegetation has remained intact, with species that have been growing for centuries, creating a majestic canopy of maple, elm, and acacia trees. However, the damage to the enclosure and the growing feeling of insecurity among the citizens made it clear that it needed to be rehabilitated, and a collaboration process was initiated with the stakeholders.
Wonderful collective intervention
DTAH, with the essential participation of the local community, planned its comprehensive extension and revitalization, with special emphasis on reinforcing neighborhood security through lighting and the creation of clear sight lines in its open space.
A reinvigorated St Andrew’s Playground Park reveals updated facilities, and improvements to the program and the connectivity with the surrounding areas. A series of flexible landscapes and equipment that is focused on people, also incorporating a specific zone for pets, a renovated playground, and multiple spaces that are ideal for social interactions, furnished with group tables and chairs where people can enjoy the long-living trees.
The elegant minimalism of Tumbler
Landscape Forms, an official partner of Urbidermis in the United States and Canada, is bringing European-designed products to the North American market, offering comprehensive furniture and lighting solutions for the urban space.
As a result, Tumbler urban lighting has been used to illuminate various areas of this spacious community playground in the capital of Ontario. Manufactured in painted, injection-molded aluminum, this elegant domestic light screen is installed in the contemporary landscape, offering modularity and increased efficiency.
Both spaces have catenary lighting, establishing a relationship between the treetops and the mottled light patterns reflected on the pavement. The use of floating light fixtures allows the number of lamp posts to be reduced, creating a more secure environment with no obstacles.
In turn, Tumbler is installed on columns on the pedestrian routes, accompanying a well-organized design that has a good rate of uniformity. Chosen for its clean, simple design, the light fixture fits in with the architecture surrounding the park, and is in keeping with its elements and vegetation. Cultivating a fun, vibrant public space that successfully encourages the community to come together.
