As part of the Nachhaltige Erneuerung (Sustainable Renewal) programme, implemented jointly by degewo, the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development, and the Marzahn-Hellersdorf District Office, several public squares and courtyards in the Berlin district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf have been transformed into climate adapted spaces.
In an area characterised by dense housing and limited natural shade, the project aims to reduce the impact of heatwaves in public spaces while providing residents with pleasant outdoor areas, even during the hottest days of summer.
The landscape design was developed by Bacher Landschaftsarchitekten, who prioritised solutions that provide immediate shade without compromising the open character of the outdoor spaces.
As part of the project, our Persol pergola, featuring an aluminium structure and a slatted roof, was installed on playgrounds and at sports facilities throughout the neighbourhood. The design also incorporates a cable system to support climbing plants, which will gradually create an additional layer of natural shade over time. The result is a climate-resilient outdoor space that offers protection from the sun on hot days while also providing a place for people to meet, relax, and spend time together.
