World Trade Center

Barcelona, Spain

The New York-based architecture studio Pei Cobb Freed & partners has reimagined the public spaces, intervening in the inner square -La Plaza-, terraces, reception areas and other common spaces. The visual connections have been recovered between the levels that make up the complex, creating quality spaces with multiple green areas, walkways and functional furniture.

Barcelona’s iconic business park celebrates a quarter of a century of life with an outstanding renovation and a view to the future.

As part of the port’s ecosystem and closely linked to the city, the complex consists of four towers arranged in a circle. Embarked upon the transformation of its common areas, the World Trade Center enters a period of opening up and community encounters.

“The visual connections have been recovered between the levels that make up the complex, creating quality spaces with multiple green areas, walkways and functional furniture.”

La Plaza stands out as the hub’s epicentre and a symbol of the change. With a classical courtyard layout, the old ornamental fountain has been removed to make way for four common areas each shaded by a canopy, which surround the fragrant orange tree garden. Office tenants have thereby seen a considerable increase in common spaces for their workers and visitors.

On the first floor, with views over the central courtyard, the terraces have been renovated to encourage moments of rest and connections among the members of this community. The essential lines of the Moon bench offer spacious surfaces and a high level of comfort. These generously proportioned, versatile platforms are made from 100% FSC certified tropical wood, which offers suitable resistance to the climate and use demands.

The Harpo family, designed by Miguel and Gonzalo Milá, offers an array of aesthetic arrangements thanks to the broad product typology. The functional and comfortable elements all display a formal humility and offer unlimited combinations, enabling users to enjoy company or time to themselves depending on the occasion. These benches are ideal for work-related informal conversation; a short timeout to reply to messages from the longue chair or to savour a few relaxing moments in the chaise longue.

From the same collection, the table and banquette create an attractive ensemble as a daily lunch option and for improvising small celebrations. It forms a connecting place between the people and organisations that share the facilities. The Harpo table also adapts ad hoc to the project’s needs. In a special version, and in combination with the Ramón chair -edited by Santa & Cole-, it offers pleasant spaces for enjoying a coffee or a snack.

“This forward-looking business centre fosters the shared enjoyment of its outdoor living spaces and offers the privilege of a direct connection with the sea.”
