Guillermo Bertólez

Architect

Renowned for his relentless academic and intellectual research, Guillermo Bertólez Cué has developed a discourse replete with parallelisms, reflections and introspective personal notes. As a professor at the La Salle School of Architecture he transmits his vision of the importance of knowing ourselves and committing to the society we live in.

Guillermo Bertólez

Guillermo Bertólez Cué holds a degree in Architecture. He is currently deputy director of the La Salle School of Architecture (ETSALS) in Barcelona.

Guillermo was strongly influenced in the first part of his career, during the 70s, by his regular, direct contact with what was being built in northern Portugal, works by the renowned architect Álvaro Siza or rationalist Fernando Távora. This interest evolved throughout his career, informing his reflections on housing, the human condition and urban planning.

For Guillermo Bertólez Cué, an advocate for generating intimate relationships between architecture and people, architects are the masters of their works, controlling measurements, proportions and symmetry, from their initial conception to the smallest details, with the aim of celebrating the social interactions that take place within their confines.

He is the author of various essays and celebrated articles, notably including El espíritu de la barraca o apuntes de cómo acercarse al hombre (The Spirit of the Barraca, or Notes on How to Adapt to Man) written in 2007, and Katsura. Los secretos del maestro escondido (Katsura, the Secrets of the Hidden Master), written in 2017. He has collaborated in monographs like Obradoiro, arquitectura y urbanismo (Obradoiro, Architecture and Urban Planning) from 1997, Quaderns d’arquitectura i urbanisme (Notebooks on Architecture and Urban Planning) (2007) and Recortes, aproximación a la obra de Fernando Blanco (Cuttings, an Approach to the Works of Fernando Blanco) (2021). And he has also spoken at different conferences and workshops, such as The square as a paradigm of abstraction: maths, art and architecture (2018) or the Architectural Projects Workshop (2011).

Guillermo Bertólez Cué is co-creator, with Javier Ferrándiz, of the Rambla litter bin (1993), which has a range of different formats and can be produced in multiple sizes.
