Industrial Facility

Industrial Designer and Architect

Industrial Facility

The London-based Industrial Facility studio was founded in 2002 by the designers Sam Hecht and Kim Colin. Their approach reflects both a thoughtful consideration of form and a unique understanding of contemporary life, creating beauty out of utility in the products, furniture and exhibitions they design.

Industrial Facility

Sam Hecht graduated in Industrial Design at the Royal College of Art in London and Kim Colin in Art History at UCLA and in Architecture at SCI-Arc in Los Angeles. In 2002, they co-founded the Industrial Facility studio in London.

Industrial Facility’s approach reflects a thoughtful consideration of form and a unique understanding of contemporary life, creating beauty out of utility in the products, furniture and exhibitions they design. Hecht and Colin look to improve the things we live with. They don’t set out to produce something different, but rather something better; they aim to design things that will last, be effective and give satisfaction often beyond what is called for by the product.

Industrial Facility has collaborated with numerous international companies producing projects that demonstrate cultural relevance and commercial success, whether because of their methodology, their philosophical approach or their honest solutions.

In 2016, influenced by disruptive technologies, Sam Hecht and Kim Colin created a new department called Future Facility which is exclusively focused on IoT products.

Both Sam Hecht and Kim Colin have earned renown as industrial designers. They are both members of the Royal Society of Arts, and a large part of their work can be found in permanent collections around the world, including the Cooper Hewitt and the Museum of Modern Art in New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Art Institute of Chicago; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Victoria and Albert Museum and the Design Museum, both in London; and the Helsinki Design Museum.

Industrial Facility defends a methodology based on bringing beneficial solutions to people and communities, which is why they decided to translate their hallmark and highly elegant interior design minimalism to the urban space, as creators of the Slope (2017) and Tumbler (2017) luminaires, thereby humanising the landscape of today’s urban living spaces.
