Xavier Nogués

Architect

The Barcelona-based architect Xavier Nogués focuses his efforts largely on improving the urban environment, as well as, in some cases, recovering the city’s traditional ecosystem, which has suffered from the unbridled urban growth of the 1960s. This, for example, is the case of the Parc de les Dunes in Castelldefels, which allows people to enjoy this part of the coastline’s typical plant life while strolling along the wooden boardwalks and platforms among the pines and dunes.

Xavier Nogués

Born in 1961, Xavier Nogués graduated from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in 1990, and completed his master’s degree in Landscape Architecture in 1996. Most of his professional activity has taken place within Catalonia’s public administration, first working for IMPSOL (the Metropolitan Institute of Land Development and Property Management) and later for the MMAMB, the institutional network responsible for managing the supramunicipal supply of services for the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB). In his position at the MMAMB, one of his priorities has been to create and ensure the perfect preservation of the parks, squares, streets and gardens in the city’s surrounding areas. His work has particularly focused on the coastline to the south of the AMB: the pine forests and dune systems of the beach in Castelldefels (1997-99), the access to the beach in El Prat (1991) and the seafront promenades in Castelldefels (2000), Viladecans (1996) and Gavà (Section I -Selected for the 1995 ADI-FAD Awards- and Section III).

In the area of industrial design, Xavier Nogués was responsible for the showering facilities on the beaches of the AMB, as well as for the lifeguard towers and various urban elements of his own design: the bench-viewpoint on the Montgat beach, a foot shower and the beach bar renovation for the AMB, the Área lighting bollard (together with Claudi Aguiló, selected for the 1998 ADI-FAD Awards), edited in 1998 by Santa & Cole, now Urbidermis, the bollards on the seafront promenade in Castelldefels and the Xammar lighting column.

Xavier Nogués is the co-creator, together with Claudi Aguiló, of the Área bollard (1998), a robust corten steel prism containing a sheet of polished stainless steel with a mirror finish that casts a low-level, diffuse light. He also co-created the Área 60 bollard (2020), a smaller version of the Área bollard, but with enhanced lighting performance, which is ideal for public and private outdoor pedestrian spaces.
