Finisterre

Joan Gaspar obtained a degree in Industrial Design from the Arts and Trades School of Barcelona. His beginnings in the world of design were in the company VAPOR where he produced minimalist style lamps. During this first stage he learned to design with limited resources, improvising simple, efficient solutions. Thanks to his involvement in the production process with the manufacturers, he learnt to design new products intelligently. Following this modest, timeless style and specialising in lighting, in 2002, Joan Gaspar opened his own design studio. There, he investigates and works on new concepts and new methods to design products. Simplicity and intelligent design are the noteworthy characteristics of his pieces. For Joan, designing is also reflecting, finding the problem and knowing how to fix it, taking into account the different forms and techniques. This construction and development path leads him to make technical, elemental and smart decisions. He says "A good design is one that tries to be simple and modest and which lasts over time.  Whether it is good or not will depend equally on the designer and the company producing it.Many of his clients are relevant designer brands like: Roca, Resol, Marset, Mobles 114, Perobell, Santa & Cole, DAE, Vilagrasa and Made Design. The pieces designed by Joan Gaspar have been selected and awarded on various occasions. In 1995, he received first prize in the Furniture Competition of the Castilla la Mancha Community and in 2000, he won first prize at the International Furniture Fair in Valencia. A year later, he was awarded the Delta Plata for his Atlas lamp collection and in 2005, for the Neón de Luz light. Joan Gaspar combines his professional life as a product designer with teaching. Since 1998, he has been giving classes on materials and technology applied in industrial design at the Elisava design school. He also collaborates with the Projects department at the Eina School. Joan Gaspar created the Finisterre bollard (1992) together with Lluís Porqueras. The Finisterre performs the dual function of lighting and a post to mark out and protect spaces. Know more

Lluís Porqueras is considered one of the most important creators of Catalan designs. After taking various architecture courses, he self-taught himself industrial design and began his professional career working in the renovation of houses and country houses in Ampurdán. In 1965, together with his friend and designer Paco Blanco, he founded the Stoa studio. A pioneering design company in Catalonia where they produced their own items and those of other designers like Enric Franch. Already very lighting-oriented, in 1979, together with Jaume Vaquero, he founded the company Vapor, an amalgamation of their surnames, and which represented the industrial area of Barcelona (Poble Nou) which they worked out of. With an austere style, they experimented with materials to find the simplicity of objects. They worked with the goal of experimenting, learning and creating new objects. Lluís Porqueras himself, working with limited economic means, created a methodology to build ethically and understand the industrial processes with the goal of achieving the best alternative for his clients. Always far from the prevailing trends, his goal was to remove ornamentation and details to achieve simple, practical pieces.Some of his clients were recognised lighting and interior design companies like Marset, Santa & Cole, Mobles 114 and Targetti, for which he designed emblematic objects that are still being produced today. Amongst his many works, the Claris suspended light and the Funiculí stand out. One of the greatest recognitions he received was being able to sell his products in the MOMA shop.
