Bet Figueras

Landscape architect

Bet Figueras

Bet Figueras is considered a pioneer of Mediterranean urban landscaping. Awarded for her intervention in Barcelona’s Botanical Gardens, she has always been faithful to her environmental values and committed to studying the urban ecosystem. She brought together a highly skilled team of women landscape architects and secured the field a respected place among the subjects on offer at ETSAB.

Bet Figueras

Bet Figueras studied architecture and landscape design at different universities, including Berkeley, but also in Georgetown and Edinburgh. She returned to Barcelona in the early 80s and founded a studio with María Jover. The new democratic municipal management was looking to regenerate the urban space with parks and green areas, in keeping with the tradition of Nicolás Rubió Tudurí. Over the course of the next decade she reformed large-scale open spaces, driving forward a new trend in Spanish landscape architecture. Uninterested in developing her own works, she focused on collaborations with leading architects like Rafael Moneo, Beth Galí and Cruz y Ortiz, inspiring them with her admiration for and in-depth knowledge of trees.

In 1987, Bet Figueras opened her own studio: Bet Figueras Associats. In collaboration with Carlos Ferrater and Josep Lluis Canosa, she participated in 1992 in the design of the housing blocks of the Olympic Village and in 1999 in Barcelona’s Botanical Gardens, a project that earned the studio the 2000 FAD award, as well as the City of Barcelona prize for Architecture and Landscape Design (1999). She also participated in the urban transformation of the Barcelona Universal Forum of Cultures and in the remodelling of the city’s Cervantes Park (1999-2003). Her work also includes private spaces, like the Bodegas Bildaínas winery in Haro, the El Bulli restaurant and the Florida and Omm hotels. She was a member of the Landscape Institute and the Spanish Association of Landscape Architects.

Bet Figueras was responsible for creating the Master’s in Landscape Architecture at the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB), where she provided the knowledge she attained in the United States and Great Britain. Furthermore, her passion for the field and education led her to train a number of different women landscape architects.

Bet Figueras, together with Miguel Milá, designed the Robert garden edging fence (2003), an exceptionally simple, timeless and functional garden edging system. Its modular and flexible design provides an effective solution for delineating green areas and circulation flows, while adapting to the needs of each terrain.

Notable locations where the Robert fence has been installed include: the Palau Robert Gardens (2003) and Plaça Catalunya (2008).
