Miguel Milá
Miguel Milá is a renowned industrial designer. In 1995, Santa & Cole's Urban Division, now Urbidermis, asked him to design an urban bench. The initial briefing gave rise to the NeoRomántico bench (1995), followed by a family of benches that have colonised cities the world over thanks to their ergonomics and functionality. In his professional career, he has been awarded six Delta de Oro awards by the ADI FAD (the Industrial Design Association for the Promotion of Art and Design) and the national design award for 1987). Miguel Milá was born in 1931 in Barcelona. He is the seventh child of a large family of eight (Pedro Milá Camps, his Uncle Pedro, contracted Antoni Gaudí to build the Casa Milá). In 1948, a young Milá entered the Barcelona Higher Technical School for Architecture (ETSAB) and seven years later, he began work in the architecture firm of his brother Alonso. Even still, Miguel Milá was not convinced by the world of architecture. In 1956 he left his studies and carried out his first interior design commission for his Aunt Nuria Sagnier's firm. Through this commission, he began to observe the lack of quality design objects for interiors, and started to experiment with various shapes and ergonomic forms. A year later, together with two architect friends, he founded Trabajos Molestos TRAMO: a company dedicated to the production and design of interior elements. This company gave rise to the creation of the iconic TMM (1958) and TMC (1961) lamps, now produced by Santa & Cole.During the 70s and 80s, Miguel Milá created the Industrial Design Association for the Promotion of Art and Design together with André Ricard, Antoni de Moragas, Oriol Bohigas and Rafael Marquina (ADI FAD), in which he participated in numerous editions. He won various Delta de Oro awards for the design of furniture and interior lighting and at the same time also participated in European design forums and events. He travelled to Venice, London and Paris frequently and became more and more involved in the world of design. In 1994, Santa & Cole's Urban Division, now Urbidermis, commissioned him to design an urban bench. This collaboration gave rise to the NeoRomántico bench (1995). Over time, the urban furniture family grew; in 2011, the aluminium NeoRomántico Liviano was the first element of the urban space to receive the "Cradle to Cradle" environmental certification. He also collaborated with Bet Figueras to create an elegant modular border for landscaped areas, the Robert (2003). Over the years, Miguel also collaborated with his son, Gonzalo Milá, another industrial designer, in the design of the Harpo family (2015), a simple element that can travel flat, and the Inner (2020), a comfortable, very hard-wearing element. His most recent collaboration explores the requirements of outdoor spaces for private use, with the Basic family (2020), a family of elements designed with urban use in mind, but with the softness of the residential world. Over the years, Miguel has received numerous highly significant awards and recognitions. These include the National Design Award (1987), the Creu de Sant Jordi (1993), the ADI Golden Compass for professional careers in Industrial Design (2008) and the Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts (2016) granted by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. Gonzalo Milá
Following some initial collaborations, Gonzalo Milá founded the Milá Diseño studio together with Miguel and Micaela Milá After two years at Santa & Cole, he opened his own firm in 2001, where he puts into practice his rigorous essentialism and his human way of designing, with concern for the importance of usefulness. Since then, Gonzalo has collaborated with numerous companies, creating elements that decorate and illuminate, and for which he has received various design awards. Gonzalo Milá obtained a degree in industrial design from the ELISAVA School. Son of famous industrial designer Miguel Milá, Gonzalo began his professional career balancing his architecture studies with his work in his father's interior and industrial design studio. He was awarded the second furniture award of the Community of Castilla-La Mancha together with Luis Victory for their design of the Agarrón coat stand. His meticulous work with small objects and close contact with the philosophy and praxis of the discipline led a young Gonzalo to study industrial design in the ELISAVA School. At the beginning of the 90s, he founded the Gòtic Sud studio, a group of young architects, photographers and designers with the ambition of meeting the creative demand of day-to-day objects. There he met Juan Carlos Inés with whom he decided to create a firm in 1994. They called it Inés-Milá and together they designed a series of objects that were picked up by large firms for their catalogues. In 1999, he joined the Urban Division of Santa & Cole, now Urbidermis, in the production and product editing departments and after this phase, in 2001, he decided to go back to the free exercising of his profession, subsequently participating in the founding of the Milá Diseño studio together with his father and sister. Said period gave rise to the reconstruction of a period apartment in the Pedrera de Gaudi and the Rama streetlamp (2000), ADI FAD 2001 Delta de Plata Award, awarded, according to the judges, "for the versatility provided by the possibility of installing the streetlamps at different heights and with different orientations", to cover any scope of lighting with a unified formal solution.In the years that followed, Gonzalo Milá continued to collaborate with Santa & Cole's Urban Division, now Urbidermis, creating other emblematic urban furniture and lighting products. His versatility has contributed to the modernisation of the city with more functional, discreet elements, as he says: "The shape of urban furniture has to be very clean and discreet, contributing to the street without filling it." He has also been involved in teaching, giving industrial design classes in the ELISAVA and EINA schools and the Barcelona Higher Technical School for Architecture (ETSAB). Gonzalo Milá is currently working in his studio, designing elements that contribute to day-to-day convenience, applying technology and observing rigorous functional usefulness, in both indoor and outdoor spaces. Gonzalo is the designer behind the Rama streelamp (2000), a versatile element to place lighting at different heights and with different orientations, blending well into the surroundings, the Candela streetlamp (2009), another flexible lighting element for large urban roads, the Bina wastepaper bin (2004), of great capacity, hard-wearing, weather-resistant and stackable, the Harpo family (2015), an extensive series of solutions for rest, formally humble and very comfortable and the Basic family (2021), for terraces and gardens or private outdoor spaces, collaborating on the latter two with his father, Miguel Milá. Light and strong
Three subtle extruded aluminum profiles with a thermal coating finish rest at their ends on two symmetrical support structures, forming together both the seat and the backrest. The Basic family includes a bench, stool and table. These outdoor residential elements are designed to be easily moved and to withstand weather and intensive use.
