Claudi Aguiló

Architect

Claudi Aguiló, a Barcelona-born architect, has undertaken many projects throughout his professional career and received generous recognition. As an industrial designer, he is co-creator of the bollard luminaires Área and Área 60, edited by Urbidermis in 1998 and 2020, among others.

Claudi Aguiló

Claudi Aguiló Riu graduated as an architect from ETSAB (Barcelona School of Architecture). In 1987 he began to collaborate with the team of architects that comprised the Projects and Works Unit of the Town Planning Services Department in the former body known as the Metropolitan Corporation of Barcelona.

In 1993, Claudi Aguiló was appointed Public Space Project and Works manager for the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona’s Association of Municipalities, where he was responsible for projects involving public space and amenities. The most noteworthy of these include the Seafront Promenade that connects Gavà and Castelldefels (Section I, 1996), the Els Pinetons Park in Ripollet (selected for the 2000 FAD Awards for outdoor spaces, selected for the 2001 Vallès Architecture Biennale and given a special mention by the jury for the 2005 biannual Barbara Cappochin awards), the boundary fence for the Can Mercader Park in Cornellà de Llobregat (selected for the 2001 FAD Awards for outdoor spaces), the Mariona Park in Molins de Rei (selected for the 2003 European Landscaping Biennale), the Salvador Gimeno Sports Centre in Sant Joan Despí (joint finalist in the 2004 Municipal Facilities Award of the Barcelona Provincial Council and selected for the Catalan Construction Awards 2004-2005-2006) and the Muntanyeta Park in Sant Boi de Llobregat (selected for the 1st Baix Llobregat, Alt Penedès and Garraf Architecture Triennale in 2005 and finalist for the 2006 FAD City and Landscape Awards). His most recent projects and work include the Central Park and Trade Show Salon in Sant Pere de Ribes, the Canigó Park in Sant Just Desvern and the new municipal swimming pool in Sant Feliu de Llobregat.

His foray into the design of urban furniture and objects stems from his search for repetitive elements with a specific identity, which mark an order or define a landmark or place. Such elements cover certain needs and systematise solutions, as is the case for the AMB Bench, SOS Wardrobe and the revamp and redesign of the AMB Shower, three urban elements designed in 1999.

Claudi Aguiló is the co-creator, together with Xavier Nogués, of the Área bollard (1998). A sturdy steel prism containing a sheet of polished stainless steel that casts a ground-level, diffused light. He is also the creator of the Área 60 bollard (2020), a smaller luminaire with an upgraded lighting system, which is ideal for public and private outdoor pedestrian spaces.
